Be Your Own Pet
Let’s talk about this band for a sec. Be Your Own Pet is one of my all-time favorite bands, and I came across them in the best way. Imagine; it’s 2010 and you’re me and you’re in eleventh grade, mad always, doing stupid shit saying stupid shit blah blah blah you get the drill. There was a CDplus that me and Meyer always went to and when they got news they were closing down ALLLLLLL their shit was ridiculously cheap. At this time in my life I was (still am) trying to flesh out my musical interests and had discovered the glory of garage-punk music. You know what I’m talking about, the loud, more-often-than-not vulgar, out of key, out of pace, “we may or may not have recorded this cd in a garage” kind of music.
So anyways I went though this phase where I would buy any cd that caught my eye in any way (yes you can judge a cd by the cover science says so) and my eyes fell upon their sophomore album “Get Awkward”. I flipped it over and I saw a song called ‘Bitches Leave’ and that was it. SOLD. Listened to/fell madly in love immediately. It was loud, it was foul-mouthed, it was original and it was powerful (Jemina Pearl’s gotta set of pipes indeed). However, all was not well in my world. A quick trip to Wiki told me that they had broken up the year prior to me discovering them. I mean it’s fine, I had the one cd right? It’s fine. Anyways long story kinda-long-already but whatever, they put out two records, the self-titled debut ‘Be Your Own Pet’ in ‘06, and ‘Get Awkward’ in ‘08 They’re both still currently in print so go buy/order it because it’s good shit.
